Charlottesville Projects Secure $4.8 Million in Affordable Housing Grants

Governor Glen Youngkin announced $22 million in Affordable and Special Needs Housing loans, benefiting 14 projects across Virginia, including two major developments in Charlottesville. The Piedmont Housing Alliance and the Greater Charlottesville Habitat for Humanity will each receive $2.4 million in funding for projects aimed to create and preserve 877 affordable housing units statewide.

More affordable housing units may be coming to Southwood project

The Hickory Hope section cleared a technical hurdle Monday when the county’s Architectural Review Board approved a permit for additional apartments in the development. Phase 1 of Southwood is expected to be ready for move in as soon as this summer. Adding Block 12, Hickory Hope, to the mix means additional affordable housing for the area.

On a large plot of land in Albemarle County just southeast of Charlottesville, construction crews are busy at work putting up townhouses and single-family homes. The project, known as the Southwood Redevelopment, includes replacement housing for more than 300 families currently living in mobile homes. A portion of the project, the Hickory Hope apartment buildings, is slated to receive just over $1 million in federal funds.

Albemarle supervisors approve Southwood redevelopment Phase 2

With questions answered, at least, satisfactorily enough, the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the rezoning from Habitat for Humanity for the Phase 2 of the Southwood redevelopment. Phase One has been under construction since 2020, but this is the big 93-acre approval needed for the 1000 residential, and mixed-used commercial, units planned for the development. Out of the 1000 residential, 227-plus will be affordable housing.
